For nearly two decades, I’ve lived and breathed Assisted Living — not just as an administrator, but as an owner, leader, and advocate for quality care. Over the years, one truth has remained the same:
You can’t lead with confidence if you don’t understand the laws that govern your work.
In Florida, Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs) operate under two key frameworks — the Florida Statutes (F.S.) and the Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.). Together, they define how we care for residents, manage staff, and build sustainable, compliant operations.
🏛️ The Foundation of Core Training
If you’re pursuing a leadership role, ALF Core Training is where it all begins. Under Florida Statute 429.52 and Florida Administrative Code 59A-36.011, every administrator (and those managing facilities with specialty licenses) must:
Complete a 26-hour ALF Core Training Course
Pass the Florida ALF Core Competency Exam before assuming responsibility for an ALF
This isn’t just a box to check — it’s a foundation. The course equips you to navigate real-world operations, protect resident rights, and make informed decisions that keep your business and your team in alignment with AHCA standards.
Even if you’re not an administrator, owners, managers, and staff can all benefit from understanding these statutes and rules. The more your team knows, the stronger your operation becomes.
⚖️ Beyond Core: The Rules That Guide Daily Operations
While F.S. 429.52 and F.A.C. 59A-36.011 focus on training and leadership requirements, the broader ALF laws you’ll work under every day include:
Florida Statutes, Chapter 429, Part I–II — Governs licensing, resident care, staffing, and operational responsibilities.
Florida Administrative Code, Chapter 59A-36 — Provides detailed operational rules enforced by AHCA, including medication management, fire safety, and staff training.
Understanding both Core Training and operational regulations ensures your facility doesn’t just pass inspections — it thrives in service and sustainability.
💛 Why I Teach
After 18 years of experience, I became a Registered ALF Core Trainer and Consultant because I’ve seen the difference that education and heart can make.
This isn’t just about compliance — it’s about compassion meeting strategy. When you lead with understanding, you create environments where residents feel safe, staff feel supported, and your business stands strong.
You can be profitable if it’s done with care, compassion, and heart.
