Assisted Living Mentorship and Coaching: What’s the Difference?

2 min read

Starting or leading an assisted living facility or home care business takes more than information. Licensing, compliance, staffing, audits, operations, and business decisions all require knowledge — but sometimes knowledge alone is not enough.

After more than 20 years in the assisted living field, I have learned the value of both learned and lived experience.

My experience has included administration, operations, compliance, audits, training, business ownership, and consulting. Those experiences shape how I now coach, mentor, and support others entering or growing within the industry.

Coaching and Mentorship Are Different

Coaching is usually focused on goals, strategy, accountability, and helping someone move forward.

Mentorship is more experience-based. A mentor can share lessons from situations they have personally navigated and help someone see challenges from a broader perspective.

  • Sometimes you need coaching.

  • Sometimes you need mentorship.

  • And sometimes you need both.

Why Lived Experience Matters

There are many things you can learn from a class, manual, or regulation.

But there are also lessons you learn only through experience — preparing for audits, managing staff, working with families, navigating compliance concerns, making difficult business decisions, and learning from mistakes.

That experience helps you recognize problems earlier, ask better questions, and make more informed decisions.

Experience Is More Than a Number

When choosing a coach or mentor, years of experience matter — but so does the type of experience.

Ask what roles they have held, what challenges they have navigated, and whether their experience relates to the support you need.

For me, mentorship is not simply about sharing information. It is about bringing more than 20 years of learned and lived experience to help someone else become better prepared.

The Goal Is Growth, Not Dependency

A good coach or mentor should not make every decision for you.

They should help you become more knowledgeable, confident, and capable of making sound decisions for yourself.

At SBK Academy, my goal is to combine education, compliance, coaching, mentorship, and real-world experience to help current and future providers better understand the road ahead.

Lead with Heart. Build with Strategy.
