One Win at a Time: How a 5K Turned into a Half Marathon — and a New Level of Leadership

Before I ever thought about running a half marathon, I simply wanted to do something for ME. I joined a running community, signed up for a small 5K, and told myself: "Just start. Just move.”
One step became a routine. One routine became discipline. And that discipline grew into something I never expected.
My Running Progression
Tampa Police 5K — my first step
P&J 10K — pushing my limits
St. Pete Half Marathon — 13.1 miles (2hrs :05mins finish time!)
I didn’t jump to the big goal.
I didn’t have the whole plan.
I didn’t move fast — I just kept moving.
You don’t have to take giant leaps.
You just have to keep moving — one win at a time.
🏅 Race Day: A Test of Discipline, Faith & Mindset
By mile 11, my body was tired, and my focus started slipping.
But at the perfect moment, God sent motivation through another runner — someone who had just completed the NYC Marathon — and that push carried me to the finish line.
When I crossed, I told myself:
“I didn’t break. I leveled up.”
This journey wasn’t just physical.
It was mental, emotional, spiritual, and personal growth.
🌱 How Running Mirrors the ALF & Business Journey
The same discipline it takes to train for a half marathon is the same discipline needed to:
start an ALF
lead people
stay compliant
rebuild after setbacks
take risks
finish what you start
step into your next level
Running taught me powerful truths:
✔ Discipline creates transformation
✔ Consistency builds confidence
✔ Small wins lead to big success
✔ You can rise, even when tired
✔ Progress matters more than perfection
Success — in running and in business — is built step by step, decision by decision, mile by mile.
🤝 Why You Need Community, Coaching & Support
One of the biggest lessons from this journey is this:
You cannot grow alone.
I didn’t finish 13.1 miles without support.
I didn’t stay committed without accountability.
I didn’t improve without a community.
And the Assisted Living industry is the same.
It is:
heavily regulated
constantly changing
challenging
complex
emotionally demanding
To succeed, you need:
a trainer
a coach
a consultant
a community that pushes you forward
This is exactly why SBK Academy and Services by Keneshia exist — to give you:
✔ Real guidance
✔ A clear roadmap
✔ Accountability
✔ Industry knowledge
✔ Confidence
✔ Support when things get overwhelming
No one succeeds alone — not in running, not in leadership, and not in the ALF world.
